Buying an RV for the First Time? Helpful Tips to Consider

So, you’ve been thinking about buying an RV? You’re an outdoor nature type and love exploring the world around you.  You want the freedom to get up and go whenever you please and not worry about expensive hotel accommodations, airline tickets or using up your time share before it expires.  You want comfort, style and functionality for a reasonable price. Where do you start? How do you find the best deal? Where will you go and how often will you go? If you’re a first time RV buyer, these might be some of the questions you’re pondering.

There are many potential advantages to owning an RV. The convenience and flexibility to pick up and go are among the top reasons many RV owners are happy. There are some disadvantages as well. The cost of fuel, storage and maintenance are all things to consider.

What type of lifestyle you live, or plan to live (if you’re retiring) will greatly determine what kind of recreational vehicle you need.  It is important to discuss your expectations, concerns, and your motivations for purchasing an RV with your sales representative, as they have industry experience and can help you make an informed decision.

Here are some helpful tips to consider when buying an RV:

  • ·         Buying Used Vs New. RV’s are much like cars and depreciate quickly after a few years. How long are you planning to keep the RV? Are you looking to keep it a few years and trade in for an upgraded or newer version? First time RV buyers may want to consider going used first. There’s less of a risk (financially) and depreciation isn’t as steep. However, buying a new RV does have its advantages. Manufacturers provide warranties and other services that many used RV’s do not provide.

  • ·         Floor Plans & Models: Buying an RV is similar to buying a house. How many people do you expect to take with you? What conveniences can you simply not live without? There are many makes, models and floor plans that fit every lifestyle, need and budget.

  • ·         Quality and Value: If you are going to buy used, look for an RV that has lower miles and some warranty coverage still available. Look for one that has been well taken care of and find out up front if there have been any problems reported with the manufacturer.  If buying new, look for manufacturers who are customer focused and have a good reputation.

  • ·         Research: Yes, any major purchase requires some research and dedication. Find out all you can before making that final decision.  Find out what insurance is required. Often times you can consolidate your insurance with one carrier and get discounts for having multiple policies.

  • ·         Finance or Pay Cash? Paying out of pocket for an RV can require quite a chunk of change. Most people just cannot afford to outright spend that kind of cash. So what kind of financing is available for RV’s? Is it like an auto loan? Similar yes, but there is some play on the length of your loan. Many banks will lend anywhere from 120-180 months, making your payment low and affordable. Find out what kind of finance fees are charged and what the current interest rate is.  Since motor homes are considered “homes”, the interest is considered tax deductible.

These are of course, just a few things to consider before purchasing your recreational vehicle. It is best to talk to your family and loved ones, write out a list of expectations and concerns, and what you envision for your ideal home away from home.
